These are really cool I didn't notice it as much in the Deadringer image, but in the previous images there's quite a bit of a "scanner shadow" that might present a problem in a print release. Would it be possible to try to re-scan those so that the background is a flat/uniform color/white?
Re: Basic Fantasy Field Guide 2
I'll fix that ASAP, I scanned those at my job but I need to get a sacanner and take my time to do it at home.chiisu81 wrote:These are really cool I didn't notice it as much in the Deadringer image, but in the previous images there's quite a bit of a "scanner shadow" that might present a problem in a print release. Urric: I was able to clean up 2 of them, but the Quill Bear will need to be re-scanned. Also, PM me how you'd like to be credited.

Heres a sketch for the owl wolf. First time doing one of these, so I dono if this
is presented the right way or what.
- Do you guys have a file type preference?
- Do you have a resolution preference? or image shape?
- Is there any other creatures that are priority for illustrations?
- Anything else I should know?

Looks good so far! I'll let Solo weigh in for corrections or clarifications, especially as he has the experience with works that will be going into print on Amazon/Createspace and Lulu.
- JPEG or PNG works; I tend to use PNG more myself
- at least 300 DPI (anything higher I scale down to 300); vertical or horizontal orientation both work, just depends on your illustration
- any that aren't illustrated have equal priority; if certain ones catch your attention go for those first
- be sure to scan in as grayscale, not black-and-white

Re: Basic Fantasy Field Guide 2
I'll double down on Chi here... scan in grayscale, always.
Regarding DPI: I know not everyone really gets that, but almost everyone understands pixels. So here are the details:
-- Images meant to be viewed in a single column must be at least 975 pixels wide.
-- Images meant to be viewed spanning the page must be at least 2000 pixels wide.
-- When in doubt, 2000 pixels wide is the minimum. I can always scale down but I can't always scale up.
-- If your scan has a lot of white space around the outside which we will need to cut off, then it needs to be bigger.
-- Get me a clean scan that's at least big enough as given above, and I can deal with the rest.
-- SCAN IN GRAYSCALE. Or in color, even. Do not EVER scan in black and white, as that means that each and every pixel is either BLACK or WHITE... the edges of all your curves will be jagged and rough, and the first thing I'll have to do is blur the image. Grayscale scans will always look better, period.

Re: Basic Fantasy Field Guide 2
Thanks for all that info guys
unfortunately I don't have a scanner. That was just a photo I sent.
I think I can get the same result that yous want if I take higher rez photos,
then use a graphics tablet and trace over the art on a 2000px layer, then
delete the photo and send the digital version to you guys.
So I will do that for that owl wolf and for all the art from now on.
Do you want png's with no background so they can be placed
beside text easier?

Re: Basic Fantasy Field Guide 2
A hi-resolution photo under good light (no shadows) sould be quite good enough, actually. No need to do all that extra work, just leave it to me.
